Last week saw a rarity on the PGA Tour……….a Tiger collapse. Vijay shot a final round 67 to win his second event of the season and take over the lead in the FedEx Cup standings. Tiger shot a final round 76 and finished outside the top 10 for the first time since missing the cut at last year’s US Open. Will this week be the start of another “monster” streak after a rare disappointment? All signs point to yes.

Even after last weeks disappearing act (sorry NBC) it will be hard to go against Tiger this week. Tiger owns this event (formerly the WGC American Express Championship) and owns Doral. Tiger is the two time defending champion of this event and has four total wins in six starts (worst finish 9th in 2004). “But that was on a different course,” you say. You’re right. Well lets check out Tiger’s record at Doral for the now defunct Ford Championship. He’s only the two time defending champ on this course.

2007 WGC-CA Championship Odds

Now that I’ve established Tiger as the overwhelming favorite this week is it safe to say that he is a lock to win? Odds are yes, unless the usual suspects step up their games. Vijay certainly could make a case (three top 10s since 2001). I also look for Ernie Els to be in the hunt this weekend. Els won the 2002 Ford Championship so he has the track record here. Ernie’s three year plan is still a work in progress, but winning a WGC event is always a good catapult in the world rankings.

Tiger showed he was human last week. It would be nice to see some of the other top golfers step up their games with the Masters on the horizon.
