Preview

There’s a decent field playing this week at the Stanford St. Jude Championship in Memphis, with five of the World’s top 11 in the mix. This is the last tournament before next week’s U.S. Open and certainly will be a warm up for those playing.

Last season Jeff Magert won with a 65 on the final day, beating Tom Pernice Jr. by three shots.

Earlier this week Phil had to withdraw due to a wrist injury that saw him WD last week as well. Many, including myself, were looking forward to a Tiger/Phil dual as a preview of the second major of the season. But Phil WD and Tiger struggled, and the dual that looked so enticing just a few weeks back may not be realisitic. But more on that in next week’s extended preview.

David Toms will certainly be in contention on Sunday as he has shined at this event. Toms has two wins (back to back in 03 and 04) and has not finished outside the top 10 since 2001. Toms is currently 39th on the money list, with four top 10 finishes on the season. His best finish this year was a T8 at the FBR Open. Toms ranks 49th in G.I.R. and 18th in Putting Average. If he can continue to hit greens and make putts he may have a third St. Jude Championship under his belt.

Always a threat to win, Vijay is the top odds man this week. A win in Memphis would be a great confidence boost heading into the Open. VJ was the winner the week before the Open last year.

All that said I’m going with Goose this week, only because I’m a homer that needs a win in Rotoff to get into the playoff picture. And Ryan Palmer will do good.

Next time you’re in Memphis head to Beale street and Silky O’Sullivan’s, home of the Diver. Tell ‘em Shlink Lincoln sent you……………..
